Lunch and Learn: Supporting children affected by intrafamilial physical abuse: what does research say about key interventions for safety and recovery?

Children who experience intrafamilial physical abuse often face complex and long‑lasting impacts on their:

  • Safety
  • Wellbeing
  • Recovery.

This webinar draws on current research to explore what we know about effective interventions that can support children’s protection, help them feel safe, and promote recovery following harm within the family.

The session will consider key evidence‑informed approaches to address intrafamilial physical abuse against children, what the key components of these interventions are, and how these interventions support recovery, protection and safeguarding needs. There will be a focus on how these findings connect to existing multidisciplinary practice in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify key evidence‑based interventions that support protection, safety planning and recovery for children affected by physical abuse
  • Recognise the key components of these interventions and consider how these support children’s recovery, protection and safeguarding needs
  • Evaluate their own current practice by considering which key components already feature, and where gaps may be evident or further training required
  • Reflect on multi‑agency roles and responsibilities, strengthening shared understanding of how collaborative practice supports better outcomes for children

The webinar will be relevant to practitioners working across social work, health, education, police and the third sector who support children and families where intrafamilial physical abuse is a concern.
