Masculinity, Media, Misogyny: A Safeguarding Insight

Why attend?

Overview

In an era where online interactions have the power to shape real-world attitudes and behaviours, understanding the complexities of incel ideology, toxic masculinity, and misogynistic narratives is crucial. Not all expressions of masculinity are harmful, but issues often arise when beliefs about what it means to be a man become extreme or rigid. This course is specifically designed for safeguarding professionals and parents, equipping them with insights and practical skills to recognise and counteract harmful online influences affecting young males today. Through a combination of real-life case studies, research and discussions, participants will explore the direct impact of these ideologies on young people’s mental health, social development, and overall wellbeing.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  • Understand the concepts of incel ideology, healthy and unhealthy masculinity, and misogyny within online contexts.
  • Recognise language, symbols, and online communities associated with incel culture and misogynistic behaviours.
  • Identify signs and indicators that a young person may be influenced by harmful narratives around masculinity.
  • Develop confidence in facilitating supportive, non-judgmental conversations about sensitive topics related to inappropriate behaviour.
  • Utilise effective strategies, tools and resources to support young people exposed to harmful online communities.
